Online Exhibitions

At the core of Their Past Your Future Scotland is the creation of a website featuring online exhibitions on the themes of World War II and subsequent conflicts.

Launched in 2010, the website will mark the impact of the 65th anniversary of World War II in Scotland with invaluable first hand accounts and digitised coverage.

The dynamic website will encourage the use of technology and heritage resources in conjunction for exploration and learning. It will feature a collection of approximately 300 online exhibitions, making a lasting contribution to the understanding of Scotland's experience of World War II and post-1945 conflicts, and their impacts on people and places in Scotland whilst also adding local interest and relevance.

Each exhibition, compiled by the participating projects, will consist of at least one recorded oral history. This reminiscence will be ‘illustrated’ with associated items, including diary extracts, newspaper articles, old photographs, archival film, documents, paintings, and photographed objects. Together with the oral history, a media-rich exhibition will be created around a person, event or location.

The projects will explore incidents, locations, people or themes using resources available in local and national museums, libraries, archives and other sources.

Exhibitions will be searchable by keywords. Within each exhibition, the user will be able to browse through the exhibition in its entirety. Additionally, they will be able to filter resources by media-type.

Please note, the Sample Exhibition, accessible from this page, illustrates the range of functionality available in the exhibitions. It is not intended to be a fully-rounded or comprehensive exhibition.
